Journal Size Questions

by Rej

I'll be starting on my first junk journal (vintage type), but I don't know how big to make it. What's the best size? Don't want it too small. Also how much smaller should the pages inside be compared to the cover?

Journal size could depend on the inside papers
by: Elena

Dear Rej, hi! I'm just finishing my first journal and in order to decide the size, I counted the dimensions of my signatures i.e. I firstly made and printed the inside pages of my journal, then organized them into signatures and then I measured the dimensions of the covers adding an extra of 1/4 on each dimension. It resulted at 8.5 x 6.5 inches, which is quite good for me. Just make sure that the paper that you'll use for the covers is big enough for the resulting dimensions of your jj. Wish you many beautiful, happy and creative moments!

I agree not too big, however I have found that it is OK to have various sizes of pages. Keeping them in reason. Have a set largest size and then some can be smaller with various envelopes tags and such. The variation is part of the charm and vintage feel of these little treasures.

Great questions Rej! I personally love any size between 5x7 and 6x9. These are great sizes for writing, photos etc, and still compact enough to carry in a tote bag. And I make my covers about 1/4 inch wider then the inside pages. You'll find more details on the 'Pamphlet Stitch' page (you didn't say what binding you plan on trying but I have a great tutorial on that page about sewing signatures, how many pages, and more.) Please share your journal with us when you're done and don't hesitate to send us your questions!
