Can I Use Original Images From Books in My JJ's?

by Dorcas
(BC, Canada)

what are the copyright laws about using an actual image (the originals) out of a book and placing them in my junk journals. I have seen on Youtube how artists are doing this. Do I need to be concerned about this?

Thank you for your reply. I have been looking for some information about this but not having much success, except for one response about the books on the 'Flower Fairies" by Cicely Mary Barker, where this practice is fine. Would this then include all art, illustrations or photographic images in any book or magazine?

The book you mentioned has images that are considered to be in the public domain because of the date of publication. That's the key when it comes to using images for profit especially when reproducing them. When researching, look for this term to find out how this applies in your area, as it can differ in different countries.

Beyond that it's really hard to get valid sources of information on this topic. It's far too complicated, and can be costly. I have found contradicting info many times over the years.

Because of the legal nature of your question, I think it will be hard to answer it here. I do hope you find what you need though :)

I emailed Daphne’s Diary and asked if I could use the pages and images found in her magazine for my journals to sell, and she said thank you for asking, but sadly NO, because different artists that work for her have copyright and or advertising just for her magazine.

Copyright infringement is a big deal in the art world. You can get into a lot of trouble if you make money from "using" copyrighted material. I am from Georgia and we have an organization called GA Lawyers for the Arts. They help people in the arts with legal questions for a small fee or for free. To be safe, contact your states organization to be safe. I have put the link to Georgia below. You can start here to get the information you need.
