Like many of you, I love the idea of creating a vintage journal that is unique and tailored from my own ideas of a beautiful piece of work. My idea was that I wanted a place where I could keep finds that I came across at antique shops and used book sales.

I decided I would use some recently purchased craft papers, but mostly I would use authentic pieces like vintage photos and letters rather than a copy. If you have treasures, why not use them?

I made the cover using several sheets of cardstock and then dyed with reds and browns to give it a leather-like look. I then glued a grunge board flourish and painted it brown, also giving it a copper-edged finish. I tea-dyed my pages using 5 pages for one signature. I sewed in 3 signatures using a cross stitch method. It was a real pain, and I'm not sure I'd do it again, but it did come out nice.

A Book of Little Treasures

Hi Margaret and thank you for answering to my questions. So many of them! I get it that you don't have a problem with pages lying flat if you don't do a lot of writing. Something tells me that I need to do some re-thinking perhaps. Most of my journals need some writing.
Thanks for taking the time,

Thanks, Sabina

Hi Sabina, Thanks for watching. I'm glad you found some inspiration :-) Both the journals are roughly the same size -- around 5.5 inches x 8 inches. I don't typically write in my journals; instead I glue things, collage, or do other art on them. The pages mostly lie flat though the book does bulk up slightly with more things added. Gluing in the sewn cardboard hold just fine. I haven't had any issues. Hope that helps!

A Book of Little Treasures

I am so glad I took the time tonight to look at questions in EVG and found your Book of Little Treasures. It is lovely, Margaret. And I am newly inspired. I loved both of your journals.
Please, can you also tell me what size you used for the second journal? is it 8 x 10? Are you planning on writing in them? if so, do the pages lie flat if you decide to write?
I also loved your idea of sewing your signatures into the piece of cardboard first and then gluing it to the spine of the cover. Great idea. Though are you sure it is enough to glue the whole lot? I want to try this idea too but wondered if it will hold.
Sorry, I am asking a lot of questions but I am new to journals. So far I have done all my artwork with Photoshop digitally.
Hugs and thank you again.
